Let’s face it, sitting behind a desk 12 hours a day can quite literally kill you. A walking desk is a nice idea but man.. are they expensive, cumbersome full-size tables, and who knows if anyone will use it. It started with getting a treadmill (Proform 650) for $175 on Craigslist, which was literally brand new and never used (this happens with treadmills and musical instruments). Very quickly we realized that 2″ pipework was used throughout, so maybe we could use 2″ PVC to secure everything. With a little cardboard, we made a template and fitted it to the desired location. After it fit nicely to our ergonomics, we traced it onto a spare piece of white oak, and cut it out with a jigsaw. Next was the key element, cut lengthwise along three pieces of PCV pipe that clamp onto the treadmill, making an EXTREMELY secure desk. Then we bought a wall mount file folder holder that holds our MacBooks… add an audio jack plug and a Plantronics headset for the obligatory conference calls, and we’re walking with gasoline!
Here’s a close-up of the PCV and 1×2 that extend to stabilize the outside of the desk. It’s pretty much permanently in this position, and anyone can drop in there laptop, plug in the keyboard dongle, thunderbolt display, power (+audio and USB if you want more)… and get Moving! Now, it’s important to state that nobody goes beyond ~2mph, as this is meant for constant skeletal & joint movement, not cardiovascular endurance workouts. However, even at < 2mph a lot more heat emanates throughout the office, almost freakishly more than you would think… multiply that with a few hours of walking time, and you’re better off than in your $1k Herman Miller chair.
It’s not just for the body, walking quite literally fires up the brain and helps your neural activity, a CT Scan is pretty illustrative.
Whenever we need the space remove the desk and fold up the treadmill:
Gym memberships are great, but making our 12 hours a day a bit more active can be a key to getting and staying in better shape for 2016… inevitably making those New Years Resolutions stick better. Hope enjoyed this and now know some of our secrets to building better software 😉
- Nearly the entire cost of the build was in this rather expensive wall mount file/chart holder for $19 http://www.amazon.com/Deflect-o-File-Chart-Holder-10-5quot/dp/B00PV0ZV9O
- ~4 feet of 2 inch PVC pipe – cut into three pieces and split down the middle with a jigsaw or saws all
- 1″x2″ wood screwed together to the PVC – measure to comfort and mount. If it’s not clear we made a large access hole opposite in the PVC pipe so we could maneuver our screw and screwdriver head, to secure it to the 1×2.
- A little sanding & polyurethane for a smooth… finish
